Glass

Glass

Although unsurpassed in its ability to reflect and transmit light, glass is a fragile material to work with. As an artistic medium, glass takes years to master, because of its complex behaviour in molten form. Much of this knowledge can only be acquired through expert tuition and practical experience.

Apart from practical skills, studio artists need strong conceptual skills. Australian studio glass is regarded as some of the most innovative in the world, because our artists are free to work outside the traditions established in historically renowned glass-making centres such as Venice and Sweden.

The Glass Studio has panoramic views, indoor-outdoor rooftop workshops, and plenty of natural light and ventilation. Facilities include a hot-glass studio (with 250-kg tank furnace), small and large kilns, cold-working facilities, a sandblasting room, and a wax area.
