Visual Discourses

Members of the cluster share a common commitment to evaluating, analysing and engaging discursively with the theory, criticism, history and collecting of art, design, fashion, architecture, and various other forms of visual culture.

Projects undertaken involve research across a broad spectrum of topics in the theory and criticism of 20th-century and contemporary art and design, recent and contemporary Australian visual culture, including Indigenous art, aspects of cultural theory, the historiography of art, landscape architecture, Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture, and medieval manuscript illustration.

Research outcomes include monographs, edited books, journal articles, conference papers, exhibitions, catalogues/catalogue essays and reviews.

Research distinctions include residency at the Bundanon Trust, the Pascall Prize for Criticism, fellowships at the British Museum and the Monash Centre in Prato (Bill Kent Research Fellowship), and national competitive grants from the ARC and the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
