He completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at Monash in 2005 and a Master of Arts (Critical Theory) in 2011. His masters research pursued a deconstructive reading of authorial presence in the work of the American conceptual artist Bruce Nauman. Stephen’s artistic practice is similarly concerned with the displacement or complication of the authorial subject, in relation to the generic and structural conditions of various artistic forms or media. Recent exhibitions include Vexed Appendix (George Paton Gallery, 2015), Faux Novel (RMIT Project Space, 2014) and Hesitation (BUS Projects, 2014). Stephen regularly writes for exhibition catalogues and periodicals, and has presented papers at conferences such as Derrida Today (New York, 2014), AAANZ (Melbourne, 2013), Impact 7 (Melbourne, 2011) and ASCP (Melbourne, 2009). He was also a facilitator of Light Projects, a curated artist-run initiative active from 2009-2011.
