Enter MADA’s inaugural Malaysian architecture competition

Monash Art Design & Architecture is proud to announce its Inaugural Architecture competition. The aim of the competition is to encourage students to showcase their drive and ability to pursue a professional degree in Architecture and to recognise architecture education in Malaysia.


Terms and Conditions


1. Eligibility
The competition is open to students and professionals in Malaysia. The projects must be carried out individually (not in groups).

Category A: High School Students (year 11 and 12)
Category B: Students currently pursuing Diploma studies and/or Bachelor in Architecture
Category C: Bachelor Architecture graduates (Part 1)


2. Free Registration
No fee or other payment will be required of those entering the competition. Please REGISTER HERE.


3. Awards

Five Category A Prizes:
• Award Certificate
• A Study Grant of AUD4000 (around RM13,500) to study Architecture program at Monash Art Design and Architecture

One Category B Grand Prize:
• Award Certificate
• A Study Grant of AUD4000 (around RM13,500) to study Architecture program at Monash Art Design and Architecture
• Dinner with the Dean of Monash Art Design and Architecture
• The projects will be featured at MADA website

Three Category B Runner-Up Prizes:
• Award Certificate
• A Study Grant of AUD4000 (around RM13,500) to study Architecture program at Monash Art Design and Architecture

One Category C Grand Prize:
• Award Certificate
• A Study Grant of AUD4000 (around RM13,500) to study Architecture program at Monash Art Design and Architecture
• Dinner with the Dean of Monash Art Design and Architecture
• The projects will be featured on the MADA website
• One ticket to the National Architecture Conference in Australia (worth around RM4,500)

This ticket allows access to the conference Opening Party along with all conference sessions and lunch on Friday and Saturday. This ticket is for the registered individual only and does not include any conference fringe events.

Three Category C Runner-Up Prizes:
• Award Certificate
• A Study Grant of AUD4000 (around RM13,500) to study Architecture program at Monash Art Design and Architecture


4. Key dates

Launch date of the competition: Monday 2 October 2017
Closing date for registration: Thursday 30 November 2017
Closing date for submission of projects: Thursday 30 November 2017
Announcement of results: Friday 15 December 2017


5. Submission of Project Folio

Each applicant must submit a maximum of 500 words essay on why you deserve the prize.

You will also need to submit a project folio as per your category. By submitting your projects, you certify it is your own original work.

Category A
Describe a problem that you have observed in your city. This can be spatial, social, cultural, economic, political, etc. Then, explain how you think architecture can help solve this problem.

Your response should be approximately 200 words (must be in English) and may include images, photographs, rough sketches, drawings or other media that you want to communicate ideas. It should show the Juries how you approach issues and how you articulate your ideas in relation to these issues. You are encouraged to be imaginative and ambitious in your response. You can propose ideas that are inventive, provocative and speculative. There is no single or correct answer. We are interested in your ideas and the thinking behind them.

Format your response as one single sided A4 page PDF. The size must not exceed 5 MB.

Category B
You must provide 3 Architectural design projects, up to five (5) A3 images for each project.

Your projects need to showcase your capabilities across a range of project types and scales. You must include drawings or photographs of the design projects, including plans, sections, details and rendered views. For each project please provide a short description of the project brief, site and aims.

Format your projects as a multipage PDF. The size must not exceed 10 MB.

Category C
You must provide 4 Architectural design projects, up to five (5) A3 images for each project.

Your projects need to showcase your capabilities across a range of project types and scales. You must include drawings or photographs of the design projects, including plans, sections, details and rendered views. For each project please provide a short description of the project brief, site and aims.

Format your projects as a multipage PDF. The size must not exceed 15 MB.
