Design for Public Transport 2030 Scholarship
This is a research scholarship opportunity within the Faculty of Art & Design at Monash University that is a result of an exciting partnership with Connex and the Institute of Transport Studies at Monash University.
This opportunity will suit an enthusiastic candidate who is interested in conducting studio research in the design of objects, spaces and communications systems associated with public transport.
The Monash Public Transport Design Research Institute
The Public Transport Design Research Institute is a joint venture between the Faculty of Art & Design and the Institute of Transport Studies, Monash University.
The focus of the Public Transport Design Research Initiative is to develop original and innovative design concepts and approaches to address the challenges faced in the planning of future public transport vehicles and infrastructure.
The initiative aims to:

Promote the unique challenges faced in designing public transport vehicles, products, spaces and communication systems;

Develop knowledge and learning about design in the public transport industry;

Upgrade the quality and breadth of design inputs used to create new public transport vehicles and infratstructure; and Create equality in design between the automotive and public transport sectors.
Connex
Connex, a Veolia Transport company, is part of the world's leading environment services group, Veolia Environment. The Melbourne train system is one of 14 rail networks operated by Veolia Transport around the world. Connex began delivering services in 1999 to Melbourne's east and north-eastern suburbs. In 2004, this expanded to cover all train services in Melbourne.
The Scholarship
The scholarship is for a Master of Design by research candidate and is awarded with an annual tax free stipend of $25,000 for two years, HECS exemption place.
The Project
Connex has identified a number of key areas of concern and a design research topic around one or a combination of those listed below would be encouraged.
The key research areas are:
Shelter, lighting, passenger safety & security, universal access, bike storage and interaction, inter-modality, information, communication and way-finding systems, and amenities.
