North Melbourne Bath House explores re-connection of a community, in response to a congested, rapidly developing urban environment, and changing barriers between public and private space. The project investigates communal identity that is established through the traditional and contemporary practice of bathing rituals. The design will allow for an emotional and physical release from the chaotic urban environment while presenting opportunities to reconnect with a heightened sense of social well-being. Exploring themes from the public pool, the Australian beach, historical context of North Melbourne Wetlands, and traditional bathing rituals, North Melbourne Bath House creates a new kind of bathing experience. Differing from other public pools and bath houses, the exterior pool Is able to be utilized all year round, as the four undulating exterior pods fill with hot temperate water in the winter, to emulate spa conditions, In the summer the pods are drained, creating sunbathing terrains.
