Absent Realm investigates decreasing physical communication between people due to the effects of everyday technology such as mobile phones. Based at the sites of Degraves Street, Flinders Lane and Centre Place in the City of Melbourne, a series of spatial interventions aim to materialise the presence of unseen physical interaction to expose an absent realm of communication. The urgency for this research is inspired by a study conducted by psychologist Dr Emily Drago, that suggests that due to the extreme use of digital communication, “…the quality and quantity of physical communication [between people] has been negatively affected.” Through explorations in materiality, physical memory in space, and other knowledge gathered through research, this project attempts to encourage a new form of physical interaction between individuals, through materialising the presence of absent communication.
