Existing cemeteries that sit within the urban fabric of cities hold a different meaning in today’s society. The landscape of cemeteries evokes a sense of a sleeping, horizontal world. In this sense, it can be established that there is a disconnection between old cemeteries and everyday urban life. The Landscape of Solace addresses this disconnection and the spatial disassociation between past, present and future by proposing a meandering boardwalk over Ornamental Lake in the Botanic Gardens that amplifies the natural qualities of the site to enhance the experience for people to find solace and share stories. The Landscape of Solace will focus on how grief can be soothed by finding solace though memories and stories as a medium to re-associate past, present and future and create a place of comfort for those who are grieving.
