Fortunate Isles is a speculative journey that combines elements of underwater habitation, body augmentation, and extreme sports through the design of an object, an interior, and a landscape. This project is aimed at extreme athletes who strive to develop, strengthen, and challenge themselves and their bodies. It articulates a new type of hero’s journey, challenging the human body with the uncertainty of future extreme environments. Transitioning from inhabiting the harsh, hard environment of the island, to the new experience of a fluid and liquid environment underwater in the wild ocean, the interiority of both body and landscape is explored. This rigorous yet fantastical project moves interior architecture into thinking about new ideas of extremity, augmentation, and unexpected environments we may soon need to inhabit. The exploration of hybrid programs is critical given the scale of extreme planetary changes we will experience in our Anthropocene future.
