Performing Identities aims to promote conversation on today’s tendencies to embed ourselves within social media and consume the updates of other peoples life. It explores the blurred distinctions of public and private life, and the exhibitionist and voyeuristic qualities created by social media and the new normal to construe and shape an ‘identity’.

Sited within Federation Square, the current conditions of surveillance is furthered through an assembly of fragments from the architectural typologies of the theatre and the panopticon to reveal performances of identities and expose exhibitionist and voyeuristic behaviours.

Focusing on the transition between public and private performance, the artificial and authentic individual, and the constructed and unmediated identity, this project uses strategies of fragmentation, anonymity, and immediacy to provide the spectating urban inhabitant with an opportunity to perform.
