Pigeon: Pet or Pest? explores the idea of ‘species entitlement’ to public space in the town of Castlemaine, with a focus on three dispersed sites within the Old Castlemaine Gaol. Wild pigeons moved in to the Gaol when prisoners and wardens moved out and abandoned the building in 1990. This project aims to grant existing pigeons living on site the right to continue occupying their choosen thresholds, and therefore create an ecology of pigeons that are neither pet nor pest, but an integrated member of the community.
As residential and commercial developments occur on the site of the Gaol in the future, this project remains embedded as a shared human and non-human commons.
