The Abstract is our ambitious research project exploring unorthodox spatial realms of reading rooms and libraries. It attempts to reinvent the tradition of a reading room environment within an existing gallery context. The Abstract is a temporary design make project and functions as both an exhibition and a reading room. The journal is the focus of the space with the aim to engage Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to the reality of publishing in academic journals. As a studio collective we were intent on challenging new ideas around non-traditional research and what it means to be a researcher in creative practice today. Drawing upon the use of typography, performance, fashion design, choreography, photography and cinematography it provokes discussion on a new spatial language in Interior Architecture. The Abstract explores blended disciplinary practice and unpacks “the interdisciplinary nature of the interior” (Lois Weinthal, ‘Toward a New Interior’: Introduction, p.19).
