From Country to City

Australians are among the most residentially mobile populations in the world. Despite the popular narrative of population growth in Australian capital cities being driven by rural-urban migration, it is evident that in Melbourne there was a net outmigration in recent years. A Sustainable Population Strategy has encouraged people to move to regional areas by promoting regional living. Many new migrants, lack social networks in their new location. Thus relocation needs to create new social connections for new migrants to remain in their new location.

The population exchange between urban and rural areas involves the exchange of social environment. How can interior architecture assist in developing sustainable population strategies that support the creation of new social connections?

Exchanging Diagram Between Urban and Rural

The proposal is to create an exchanging program for the potential migrants. The urban and rural quality will be simulated and blended together subtly. The users can experience from ‘city’ to ‘country’ or ‘country’ to ‘city’ and meet in the utopian pleasure garden. Perceived quality of life was highest in the medium density and medium size area, so between urban restaurant and the great outdoors, the pleasure garden will be utopian.

The existing flower market was merged into the exchanging program to enhance the exchanging experience and provide new shopping experience.

If the exchange of social environment can be simulated and communicated among potential migrants, a new social connection can be created and the relocation could be more sustainable. My project proposes a mechanism which allows this to happen. The mechanism is to provide a spatial exchange program for people to communicate and create new social connections. This is a speculative project that encourages a series of actions to occur that exchange and create new connections between people and people, space and space. It is a miniature of the communication and linkages between urban and rural.
