Melbourne Chinatown Eco-Museum

This research project is about how interior architecture can provide a contemporary reading of Melbourne Chinatown's living culture that is both strongly rooted in tradition and at the same time significantly influenced by Australian culture. It is intended to reveal this cultural complexity of this precinct in order to offer an alternative view to the generic preconceptions of 'Chinatown' as an exotic Chinese theme park. The proposal consists of a series of interventions: an Inflatable Tea House, a Religious Reading Room, a Mahjong Stage and a Neon Mahjong installation. These interventions together form the Melbourne Chinatown Eco-Museum and propose a new idea of a more holistic interpretation of cultural heritage and complexity.
