The work presented here arrives via various encounters between painting, writing and the anxieties transmitted by closed circuit television screens (CCTV). The work results from the simultaneous existence of CCTV screens and painting as twenty-first century image-generating systems. The decision, the desire even, to regard painting as a discipline is considered in relation to the formal attributes and anxieties transmitted by CCTV screens, combined with apprehensions thrown up by the translation of painting into writing within the exegetical context. This sets up the idea that the exhibition should be considered a triptych of compromised painting, anxious writing and translated CCTV screens.
This exhibition comprises the practical component of Steven Rendall’s PhD research.
