Half a proposition for a banner march and a black cube hot air balloon no.1. 2013
Acrylic on MDF, 21 x 30 cm. courtesy of the artist and Sutton Gallery.
This exegesis exhibition, Half a proposition for a banner march and a black cube hot air balloon is the final presentation of the doctoral research paper of the same name. The research and its doctoral exhibition investigated and discussed the 1915 painting Black Square by Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) and its relationship to Mecca’s black cube, the holy Kaaba in Saudi Arabia, implicating both venerable objects within a singular historical trajectory. The aim was to utilise both forms in a process of demarcation towards the creation and launch of a black cube shaped hot air balloon, the principle component of the research. The paper investigated the historical and social backgrounds of both objects in an act of overt sabotage of meanings and associations and a notional imploration to liberate the square.
This exhibition comprises the practical component of Raafat Ishak’s PhD research.
Congratulations to PhD candidate Raafat Ishak on the success of his exhibition Half a Proposition for a Banner March and a Black Cube Hot Air Balloon at MADA Gallery.
