Extending the Use of Vernacular Photography forms part of Luhsun Tan’s recent PhD research. This critically examines representation of the past through the lens of vernacular photography and film. Art history, particularly Derrida’s spectre, is used here to deconstruct abstract expectations of history and social realism. The disruption of related archives introduces a messianic trace that is the public engagement between post-colonialism and an evolving post-colonial discourse.
