Applications for Graduate Research courses with Monash, as managed through the Faculty of Art Design & Architecture (MADA), are assessed against a number of research admission criteria.
Prospective Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) applicants must familiarise themselves with and understand the requirements and obligations relating to course admission and progression requirements. All prospective HDR candidates are encouraged to read the relevant course and program outlines as detailed in the University Course-finder, Postgraduate Course Guide and relevant Doctoral or Master’s by Research Handbook to ensure a thorough understanding of the University’s minimum academic entry requirements for research degrees. MADA encourages enquiries from prospective HDR applicants early in the HDR application process to ensure you are provided with all the information needed to progress your application.
Applications for HDR have particular entrance requirements and defined application processes; at MADA there are additional entrance requirements which must be completed for your application to be considered for a place in this highly competitive program of study.
Note: The steps in the application process at MADA as outlined on this page are essential elements of your application to undertake an HDR course. Failure to respond to any section of the application process or to omit key application information (including providing supporting academic transcripts, evidence of residency, and details of proposed research and folio) will result in your application not progressing through the application process and potentially deemed ineligible for consideration.
Completion of the HDR Expression of Interest Form (DOCX, 842 KB) (and provision of accompanying supporting documentation) is a key requirement of the application process.
Your Expression of Interest documentation is your chance to demonstrate your motivation to produce innovative and leading edge research outcomes in one of the MADA disciplines – Architecture, Design, Fine Art, Curatorial Practice, or Art History & Theory.
During this stage we will be seeking to understand your educational background, motivation to undertake research, areas of interest and your experience in research as well as your relevant employment history. We will need to consider your research interests so that we can identify potential research supervision for you and to determine how your proposed research can be supported by the faculty. Some disciplines will contact you to discuss your proposed research.
The EOI form will not be accepted without the required accompanying documentation as listed on the form.
Alternatively the folio can be sent on CD or DVD to:
Faculty of Art Design & Architecture
Building G, Room G2.13
900 Dandenong Rd
Caulfield East Victoria 3145
Guidelines for preparing your Expression of Interest documentation as listed above, including how to structure your research proposal, CV, folio, required academic transcripts and other documentation, are provided to give you the best possible guidance in the preparation of your application.
On receipt of your Expression of Interest we will be in touch to ascertain any further details and to provide feedback on your research proposal, potential supervision and resources. At this stage your research proposal is not a formal application but an expression of interest to undertake research at MADA.
Depending on the time of year, please allow 6-8 weeks for your EOI submission to the faculty to be processed. EOIs received within four (4) weeks of the close of an application round may be referred to a future round for consideration.
Where your Expression of Interest meets the requirements for an application for the course to be considered and where MADA is able to identify appropriate resource capacity and supervision for your intended research, you will be provided with an ‘Invitation to Apply’.
The invitation to apply will outline how to progress to a formal application.
Where an Expression of Interest does not meet the entry or research requirements or resources are not available to support the proposed research, you will be provided with feedback.
Where you are issued with an ‘Invitation to Apply’, you will be advised on how to submit a formal application using the University’s online application system.
The University closing date for HDR scholarship applications is 31 May and 31 October each year.
Please upload your documentation with your online application at:
Applications can be made for a scholarship and candidature admission in the one application. Monash Graduate Education will inform you of the outcome of your application via email.
Places in research degrees are subject to the availability of appropriate resources to support the proposed research project and the application process is highly competitive; candidatures are only offered when all entry criteria are met and the supporting Faculty has resources and supervisory capacity suitable for your proposed research.
If you are offered a place at Monash, your letter of offer will outline the enrolment process.
