I learned to spool knit on a cotton reel when I was seven and when I was eight I was taught to knit at school. I knitted a dolls bonnet. Crochet followed a few years later. Whilst I never had a doll to fit the bonnet I was always intrigued with the process of looping a single strand of yarn into a 2D shape that could sculpt the body as a covering. I was fascinated with the use of grids and stitch combinations for the formation of an infinite variety of patterns. Garment making was soon complemented with toy making but I could always see the potential of drawing the strand through space and creating 3D forms. Wire and plastics provide ideal materials for this process. Outer space becomes inner space with the meditative repetitive action, or concentration on patterns and grids, stilling the mind and keeping me together.
