My design proposal aims to achieve social interaction between vulnerable, mixed cultures that are new-arrival Asylum Seekers. The design is to provide living conditions that help communities evolve, although with the constraints of a limited period of time. Research shows there are more and more migrants on bridging visas than ever before. The vast numbers have resulted in the use of unsafe and unstable examples of ‘homes’, resulting in the lack of communal involvement and access to Melbourne culture. Through the adaptive reuse of Berth no. 5 North Wharf in the heart of Melbourne, the design proposes temporary housing for public and private spaces and living fragments that keep newcomers intact with their new urban cityscape. The strategically designed spaces will allow the migrants to practice their domestic rituals from their home nation to add to the continual growing cultural diversity that makes up Melbourne.
