An Ode To Memory - Aged Care for Alzheimer's Patients
This project addresses the relationship between memory and place, and how architecture captures and triggers memory. By manipulating architecture in order to evoke thoughts and feelings, the aim of this project is to aid in memory recognition for those suffering moderate Alzheimer's disease within a low-care environment.
Through the use of spatial cues and materiality techniques, the design takes residents on a journey through life's various stages, from infancy to old-age.
The chosen site was historically a mental institution, more recently renovated into a residential home. The marriage of the history of the building and its existing condition makes a strong case for developing my project and embracing the multi-layered concept of memory within architecture.
