eMOTION explores fostering rich experiences through the sequential choreography of atmospheres and the generation of emotive spaces. It questions how form can follow the function of facilitating emotive responses through atmospheric spaces. The investigation employs a range of strategies including: scale, sound, visual cues, tactility, temperature, and light gradients to influence speed of movement and moods, and coordinate sequential experiences. These ideas and strategies have been tested through an “emotive museum” facility inspired by the tortured life of Alberto Giacometti, whose experiences simply provided an armature to design a narrative emotional journey. Drawing lessons from SANAA’s 21st Century Museum, the sequential occupation of multiple audiences – visitors and general – have been woven through the project and into the surroundings. As visitors progress through the facility they encounter a series of highly charged emotion inducing spaces coupled with relief zones and interconnected to general accommodations.
