Students will explore the adaptation and re-use of the existing Old Castlemaine Goal facility within the regional town of Castlemaine in Central Victoria.
Castlemaine is a township with a strong creative ambition. Debate has raged for some time as to the ideal proposition for the townships Old Goal which sits prominently over the township. The prison was closed to inmates in 1990 and has since had a number of unsuccessful ventures call the vast facility home. There is restlessness within the township regarding both the status quo and the proposed future of the facility.
Design Proposal The program of the proposal will call for the design of a new community/cultural centre which may include civic facilities, a museum, a theatre, an art gallery and options for accommodation. Students will be encouraged to question the brief and explore other opportunities for program throughout the semester. Students will present their proposals to key stakeholders within the township and the studio will conclude with an exhibition in November/ December 2015 in Castlemaine.
Rural context research Students will look at both the current and historical programs associated with the township and speculate on the reintroduction of these civic programs into the current Old Goal site, exploring the potential for a revival of the facility.
Architectural representation and exploration Students will investigate precedent architecture, site, researching, reviewing, redrawing and remodelling in order to understand the spatial and physical elements of architecture. A combination of digital and physical models will be produced throughout the semester.
Key Themes • Regional renewal at civic scale • Program and planning configuration (emphasis on the section) • Engagement with township/community • The role of context in community architecture • Exploration of Heritage architecture and opportunities for intervention
Outcomes Three design esquisses will be undertaken before mid- semester which will each explore the design potential within various sites within the township, ultimately leading to a single proposal for the Goal Site. Following mid semester students will develop a new community facility incorporating the Old Goal site/buildings. Students will be encouraged to pursue any suggested program revealed through earlier urban research. Students will continue exploration and refinement of the program, building form and building skin, encouraged to challenge the brief and question architectures position in a heritage/rural context.
