Locus: a particular position or place. The concept of 'place' is the key driver in this live/work project in Swan Street, Cremorne. Locus is an investigation of the unique urban qualities of Cremorne + Richmond, at the scales of urban network, solid/void, threshold and detail. The design methodology reflects on these qualities and how they can inform new ways of arranging a building and formulating space. The ultimate agenda is to design a building that becomes a place particular in itself, a new player in the context.
Four micro-communities are stacked vertically, alongside an interface of work spaces and public destinations. Each community is defined by a unique apartment typology, and is arranged around a particular outdoor space. These outdoor spaces form a continuous circulatory link, a slow route through the building that aims to counter the isolation of stacked floor plates, and foster diversity and collectivity.
