Levels of Engagement Four urban propositions for the City of Melbourne
The City of Melbourne promotes the city centre as a place for innovation via its aptitude for creative risk taking. This predisposition provides the potential to critically engage with the City’s strategic plans surrounding sustainability. This engagement is sparked by an analysis of the City of Melbourne’s planning policies and enacted through a series of small-scale architectural interventions that are conceived of as catalysts for a wider urban network. Located at different levels of and locations within the city centre, the suite of projects aim to build an image of the potential future of the city as a whole and questions the contribution careful, small scale architectural interventions may make to its sustainable development. In each project the detail is negotiated as an opportunity to explore tactics towards engagement at the scale of human experience, in view of connecting these sustainable urban strategies to the individual.
At Roof level, a light weight structural frame works with the urban forest strategy to propose the implementation of productive infrastructure for vegetation growth.
First Level Intervention
At First level - level a lightly programmed stair responds to the Climate change adaptation strategy along with the proposed extension of the retail core across Elizabeth street to reactivate of under-used, first floor level space.
Ground Level Intervention
At Ground level two glass cubes straddle a line of public and private space in reaction to retrofitting schemes, proposing the temporary occupation of the abundant ‘blank’ foyer spaces in the CBD
Water Level Intervention
At water level, a system of steps and vegetation answers the municipal strategic statement to connect the city to the Yarra by expressively announcing the moment where this occurs.
